‘Twas mercy brought me from my Pagan land,
Taught my benighted soul to understand,
That there’s a God, that there’s a Saviour too:
Once I redemption neither sought nor knew.
Some view our sable race with scornful eye,
“Their color is a diabolic die.”
Remember, Christians, Negroes, black as Cain,
May be refin’d, and join th’ angelic train.”
~ Phillis Wheatley

In honor of Phillis Wheatley, who died on this day in 1784.  She was the first African American and first U.S. slave to publish a book of poems and only the third American woman to do so.

  1. JD, the word “legacy” comes to mind, but that might not be as accurate as the word used by the blogger above: “testimony”. This is quite a woman. Sometimes I use the word “is” as opposed to “was”, when it comes to individuals who have “finished the race”, leaving examples in their wake. “Is” … because they are alive in the Kingdom. I’m sorry I don’t get by here more often. You have a great blog. And, thank you … by the way … for stopping by the Other Side of the Trees. Peace to you and yours, JD. T
