Fine quotes here! I clicked in on the original article, since my father had once done some research on Garfield. Howard Short’s article is a fine piece overall, yet it curiously neglects to mention the other two strands of the frontier American Restoration Movement that became the (independent) Christian Church and Church of Christ. Although divergence didn’t really take hold until the 20th century, the name “Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)” tends to confuse matters when one compares to church signs these days.
Garfield’s mores seem generally aligned with the more conservative, larger branches of the movement: the (independent) Christian Church and Church of Christ.
