QUOTE (Martin Niemöller) – Jan 14

January 14, 2014

Martin“First they came for the Socialists,
and I did not speak out–
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists,
and I did not speak out–
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I did not speak out–
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me–
and there was no one left to speak for me.”
~ Martin Niemöller

In honor of Martin Niemöller, a prominent Protestant pastor in Nazi Germany, who was born on this day in 1892. He spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps.

  1. Wow! I have been having this conversation with friends the past few days. It is so important that we don’t shrink back. Every voice counts.

    • That is so true. It is good to remember that when rights are taken away, they are taken away from everyone even thought you might still possess them.

  2. Awesome cry to speak up! Stand up! Live a life that counts!

    • Amen

  3. The statement is powerful, especially as it was backed up by Pastor Niemoller’s actions. If it is of any interest, I quoted him myself while writing on anti-semitism. See, alawyersprayers.com/2012/04/10/blood-libel-part-1/ and alawyersprayers.com/2012/04/18/blood-libel-part-2/.

    • Hey Anna – thank you for the links; very good articles and timely warning. The reality is that anti-semitism did not die with the Nazis.
      God Bless!
