I’m on the Highway to Heaven – Sept. 5th

September 5, 2011

“And a highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Way of Holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it. It shall belong to those who walk on the way; even if they are fools, they shall not go astray. No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there.” Isaiah 35:8-9

Isaiah is talking about a “highway to heaven”.  This highway is the diametric opposite of the “highway to hell” that AC-DC sang about.  However, both of these highways are very real.  The reality is that there are only two highways in this world.   There are no other routes.  There is no need to search MapQuest or Google.  There are only two highways and both highways are one-way roads with very different destinations.

The travelers of these two highways are very different.  The unclean and defiled are the only ones who travel the “highway to hell” and the clean are the only ones who travel the “highway to heaven”.  There are only cleansed persons on the “highway to heaven”.  You can’t even go up the on-ramp without being cleansed.

The “highway to heaven” is a toll road.  The toll to enter that highway is the payment of the penalty of sin.  That is how we are made clean.  It is a toll payment that only the blood of Christ can make.  God is the toll keeper and Jesus is the payment.  No one enters the “highway to heaven” without be cleansed by the Blood of the Lamb.

The “highway to heaven” is a road that is without off-ramps.  Those on the highway are clean otherwise they would not be there.  A person on the “highway to heaven” cannot mess it up even if they are a fool because the toll was not based on anything they did.  It was based on the toll paid by Christ.

The “highway to heaven” is called the way of holiness.  Holiness is the transformation of human nature and will into conformity to God’s divine nature and will.  The way of holiness is a route by which we walk and press forward with our eyes on God’s glory, in obedience to him because we love and enjoy God Almighty.   There is no need to search for the way of holiness.  Are you on the right path?  There is no mystery that has to be solved.  There is no level of enlightenment that must be obtained.  There is nothing to be afraid of.  God himself has laid the course of the highway and we are directed by his divine authority and we are protected by his divine covering.

When we resist the authority of God over our lives and refuse to live in obedience, then we take a rest stop on the “highway to heaven”.  The toll may have been paid but you cannot be moving along the “way of holiness” while living in disobedience.  We often wonder why we feel so distance from God.  It may be due to the fact that you are not moving on the “way to holiness” and are stuck in the “rest stop of selfishness”.

PRAYER: Lord, thank you for paying a toll that I could never pay.  Thank you for protecting me and keeping me on your path even when I act like a fool.  Lord, keep me moving forward in holiness.  Don’t let me take a rest stop filled with my own selfishness.  May I keep my eyes on you at all time for you glory and my enjoyment.    Amen
